December 31,2002 Christmas pets need second chance

Some of the Christmas gifts already being cast away include those that breathe,
eat, love and occasionally slobber. Two Christmas puppies were brought to the
Bartow County Animal Shelter on Dec. 26 alone, possibly after having their
pictures taken during family portraits. Looking for a buddy, Julie Robinson
adopted an abandoned Christmas puppy on Monday, planning to have a far longer
commitment. The dog was reportedly given away to "a good home" from outside a
Wal-mart....

adoptable ones
San Diego County
animal control officials are closing in on an ambitious goal to end the killing
of healthy and friendly animals at their shelters by June 2005. Since July, the
start of the county's fiscal year, only three adoptable animals – one dog and
two rabbits – have been euthanized. That compares with 393 adoptable animals
that were destroyed in fiscal 2001....

terrified of humans after his ears were sliced off with a razor blade, allegedly
to make him look meaner. When the SPCA seized him in July, the
chocolate-coloured pup's ears were infected and swollen. He either growled or
cowered when anyone made an attempt to stroke him particularly near his head....

Dog dancing is the new sport in the canine world.
A Warwickshire village is playing host to one of the largest dog dancing
competitions in the country. More than 100 dancing canines have been strutting
their stuff in Ryton on Dunsmore since 0830 GMT on Monday morning. The dogs will
be competing in dances as diverse as a reel, jig, waltz or jive with their

shared his big day with hundreds of people and pets he'd never met. There were
dog daiquiris and a dog cake. A highlight was a "barkini" contest for dogs
sporting bikinis.It was OK with Wilbur that his party went to the dogs. After
all, he's a dog himself - a Great Dane whose owners consider him part of the
family.....

gets dozens of new residents in an influx likely to last into January. Blaze was
brought to the Citrus County Animal Control center Friday. The former owner
could not afford to keep Blaze, a bulldog mix, and didn't know how old the dog
is or whether he had been sterilized. After the latest influx, the shelter,
which has a capacity of about 200 animals, now has 55 cats and 70 dogs that need
