Henderson has been training dogs since he got Duke, the oldest, eight years ago.

    Australia--The country's number one sheep dog trialing event, the Australian Supreme three-sheep Championship, has just started. The gruelling contest has attracted over 100 canine competitors to Scottsdale in Tasmania, and the biggest unknown in this trial are the sheep.

    New York Times--Canine genome more similar to humans' than that of mice. Researchers have pieced together a draft of the dog genome, the sequence of DNA units that includes all the genetic instructions needed to make a dog. The draft is very rough, but it is enough to draw certain conclusions about the nature of dogginess.

    Winona Daily--Police dog work runs in the family up in Wabasha County. Actually, it runs in two families in the Wabasha County Sheriff's Department. Sheriff's deputy Jayson Lorenson, 25, has been the handler of a K-9 German shepherd named Kutter since it arrived in Wabasha in May.

    TOKYO-- Japanese researcher claims that dogs can sense imminent earthquakes and that observing their behavior could improve prediction efforts. Kiyoshi Shimamura, a public health doctor, said that during years of practice he noticed a jump in dog bites and other dog-related complaints around times that earthquakes occurred.

    Fort-Lauderdale--Firefighters investigating a foul odor in a Fort Lauderdale apartment on Saturday found a female dog and three of her puppies, all dead.
     

  • September 22, Neighbor faces felony counts in dog slaying
    PLAINFIELD — A local man is facing charges after he allegedly shot and killed his neighbor’s dog for urinating in his yard. Police said William Buchert, 44, shot the pet basset hound with a pellet gun on Thursday. He was charged later that day with cruelty to animals, unlawful discharge of a firearm and breach of peace.

    WCJB TV 20 News--Two year old Prancer, an English Springier Spaniel, was brought to the University of Florida Vet School a month ago for a problem with her pulmonary artery and aorta. The two were joined, causing blood to flow into Prancer's lungs.

    Rex Harper's Cornish home is testament to his love of animals, as Andrea Kuhn discovered when she paid a visit to the remarkable campaigner. For a man who has spent more than 45 years caring for animals, it is somewhat ironic that it all started after Rex Harper was bitten by a dog.

    About a year and a half ago, Susan Benson adopted a German shepherd mix from the Billings Animal Shelter. Since late August, Benson and the dog have been back at the shelter where Sugar is being held as a vicious dog in the pound's stray dog section.

    FORT WORTH -- The Fort Worth Kennel Club's 93rd All-Breed Dog Show will be the centerpiece of canine competitions Friday through Sunday in the Amon G. Carter Jr. Exhibits Hall at the Will Rogers Memorial Center. More than 1,600 dogs, representing 132 breeds, are registered to compete in the show Saturday.

    Tucson--The Humane Society of Southern Arizona cremated more than 10,000 euthanized pets last year. More than 19,000 unwanted dogs and cats were euthanized in Pima County last year, with many of the carcasses winding up at the dump like so many discarded egg cartons, dirty coffee filters and mounds of junk mail.

    East London - New legislation regarding the use of police dogs is playing into the hands of criminals, with arrests made by dog unit members here at an all-time low. The directive to police forbidding use of dogs to seek and catch criminals was issued under section 49 of the Criminal Procedure Act in August.

    Capital News 9--Some Albany dog lovers want to take a proposed law off the table for good. A "dog sit-in" was held Monday at City Hall. They contend the City Dog Leash Law is poorly crafted and punishes the mass number of law-abiding dog owners because of a few irresponsible owners.

    Indiana--Bill and Angi Crackel, of Merrillville, were so irritated by the process of adopting their dog at Lake County Animal Control they named him Hoops for the red tape they encountered. They had considered calling him Lucky, which Hoops was since the great majority of animals taken in by the county pound do not leave alive.

    Kansas--At least 28 cities and six counties nationwide, including Austin, Texas, and Palm Beach County, Fla., have laws restricting the teathering of animals. Wichitans who leave their dogs tied up all the time can now face fines of up to $500. But most folks who violate the new ordinance will get off with a warning for now.

"I felt like I was ready to touch a lot of people through their pets."

    Texas--An urgent appeal is being voiced for both foster homes and monetary donations to care for 197 distressed dogs seized Thursday after their owner was arrested for cruelty. Efforts to evaluate and medicate the flea- and tick-infested animals continued Friday by a team of four volunteers from the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals of Texas, one of several entities joining the Precinct 4 Constable's office for temporary custody.

    She was just 1 year old, a brindle pit bull mix. As a puppy she was dumped on the freeway, but rescued by a teenager who kept her briefly. Then he gave her to a friend who already had four dogs. Soon, however, the new guardian realized that five dogs were too demanding and the pup was given to yet another person who soon moved.
